        What is a Deed Poll used for?

A Deed Poll is a name change document which legally states you have changed your name.  This can be first, middle or surnames or your entire name.

Who is able to change their name?

Any person with a UK residency can apply for a Deed Poll to change their name provided they are over the age of 16.  If you wish to change your name and are under 16 then your parents or legal guardians must apply for the Deed Poll.

Who do I need to inform once I have purchased the Deed Poll to change my name?

DVLA, Passport Office, Employer, Inland Revenue, Department of Work and Pensions, Banks, Local Council, Doctor, Dentist, Credit companies, Utility companies, Schools.

Who can witness my Deed Poll?

Have a witness who is over 18, does not live at the same address and is not related to you sign the Deed Poll.  This person does not have to be of a professional background to sign your Deed Poll and witness your name change.

Why do people change their names?

People may choose to change their names by Deed Poll for various reasons.  For example a dislike of a current name, after a divorce a woman may choose to revert back to using her maiden name or a couple co-habiting may wish to have the same surname.

Can I change my child’s name by Deed Poll?

Yes you can change your child’s name by Deed Poll.  You will need to have parental responsibility.  Children born after December 2003 will automatically have both mother and father as holding parental responsibility and therefore both parents will need to sign the Deed Poll, however sometimes there are certain circumstances when this does not apply so please call us if you are unsure.  We have certain documents we can provide with the Deed Poll for all kinds of circumstances.

When I change my name by Deed Poll is my information stored on a central database for Deed Poll’s?

No, there is no Deed Poll central database.

Can I call myself what I like?

You can call yourself any name your choose to change via Deed Poll as long as it is not offensive or for fraudulent purposes.
